Macabre...ish Horror Review: American Mary

I wasn’t sure about American Mary when I first saw it on tv, it’s one of the few movies that I had to watch all the way to the end to decide if I liked it.

It’s a story about a woman who ends up leaving medical school after one of her colleagues sexually assaults her at a party. She then turns a previous side hustle into a full time career, that of body modification.

All the while her popularity explodes in certain alternative communities, she also juggles enacting her revenge and being investigated for the disappearance of previously mentioned colleague.

Eventually, the consequences of the lives of a few of her clients bleed over into hers, as a result of the alterations she made to their bodies, threatening the life she’s built for herself. And potentially her safety.

Very suddenly Mary finds herself at a crossroads and she finds out for herself that even not choosing is a choice and she pays dearly.

I really enjoyed the story, it made a lot of sense, as well as the unique cast of characters, lots of alternative people and lifestyle. It’s gory and graphic, with more than a little weird. With great cinematography and effects! This movie is heavy though and the end kind of broke my heart.

So I bought this movie because it is a definite win for me! I hope to enjoy more from the Soska Sisters.
