Macabre...ish Horror Review: Big Driver
Big Driver, 2014/ 87 min.
Tess is a mystery writer with a speaking engagement in Massachusetts, afterwards, armed with a short cut from the librarian, Ramona, who invited her to speak, she heads homeward. Unfortunately, she hits some debris in the road and is greeted by her worst nightmare.
Finding herself still alive after a literal giant had his way with her, then disposed of her, Tess, is traumatized. She finds her way home and her writer’s mind goes over the last hours as a way to cope and with her research/detective skills, she figures out what happened and who’s to blame.
Tess is nobody’s victim and she has half a plan and with a little help from a local, she’ll have her justice. Surprisingly along the way she finds more horrific surprises lurking in this small town viper pit. And it’s been going on for years.
When it’s all said and done, this town will owe her a debt of gratitude that it’ll never know they owe or be able to repay. This is based on the Stephen King novella of the same name, in the book Full Dark, No stars.
This is a good, intense little mystery. Just like the short story! I first read the story and didn’t think it needed a movie but here we are! It was worth the watch for the stellar cast...Olympia Dukakis, Joan Jett and Maria Bello! Hard story to read and watch and with typical King flair, many of Tess’ conscience voices belong to her GPS and characters in her books. Plus a very satisfying end. Well done!
If you liked this movie, I highly recommend the book which was written in 2010 because the other short stories are just as good, though different! Here’s the audiobook option if you prefer to just listen to a few good tales. Enjoy!
