Macabre…ish Horror Review: Day Zero

Day Zero, 2022/ 1 hr 22 min

The Philippines is experiencing a viral outbreak and unfortunately for Emon (Brandon Vera)he  is in prison when it starts. He was set to be paroled soon, if he doesn’t mess up but this outbreak has changed the plan. The infection spreads fast and the change happens faster and Emon and his friend, Timoy (Pepe Herrera) have to fight their way through hundreds of inmates and guards turned zombie and if they’re lucky, find a way out. They need to get to their families.

Good news, they run out of the open but soon to be overrun front gate to a police van. And after extricating a zombie cop, they head home. Except at home, their families are already fighting the same outbreak, in a crowded tenement building.

But don’t worry because Emon was in prison for beating someone up and in fact, he is very good at it. He is former US Special Forces, and is well trained in weapons and hand to hand combat. In the meantime, Emon’s wife, Sheryl (Mary Jean Lastimosa) and his deaf daughter, Jane (Freya Fury Montierro) are watching their neighbors turn and running for their lives and hiding. Along with Timoy’s family.

They have a plan and a place to escape to but first, they have to fight their way into the building, find their families and fight their way back out, without getting bitten. No problem.

Except, there are way too many people and Emon can’t kill enough zombies, fast enough to make a difference. The infected are attacking just to spread the infection and they are fast. When it’s all said and done, only two of their group who make it out alive and uninfected. But first, Emon gets to see Sheryl and Jane again and he speaks to Jane with sign language for the first time.

They fight their way, to an exit and transport out but the undead residents are hot on their heels. They won’t all make it but they fought like hell, trying.

This zombie film was directed by Filipino New Zealander, Joey De Guzman. This film is set in the Philippines and if you like fast zombies, great fight scenes and kill sequences, you might like this one. This movie flew by because everything was so fast, I really enjoyed this one.
