Macabre…ish Horror Review: Freaky

Freaky, 2020/ 1 hr 42 min.

While discussing the legend of the serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn) around a fire, some teens are slaughtered when that very killer breaks in the house. Before he leaves, the Butcher takes an ancient dagger with him, known as La Dola.

The next day, Thursday the 12th, bullied teen, Millie (Kathryn Newton), is the mascot in the homecoming game at Blissfield Valley High and after the school empties for the evening, The Butcher hunts her down and stabs her with La Dola and he receives an identical wound. Millie’s sister, Charlene (Dana Drori), a policewoman, arrives, scares him off, recovers La Dola as evidence and launches a manhunt.

The next morning, Friday the 13th, Millie and The Butcher has discovered they switched bodies. And they both return to the high school, The Butcher, as Millie, kills her biggest bully, Ryler (Melissa Collazo), via cryo tank and slashes through a few others including faculty in horrific and graphic style.

Meanwhile, Millie finds her friends, Nyla (Celeste O’Connor) and Josh (Misha Osherovich), and though in The Butcher’s body and after freaking them out and beating them up, she’s able to prove her identity to them.

They do research on La Dola with the help of the Spanish teacher and discover she has to stab him in order to switch back. And she has to do it before midnight or the switch will be permanent.

Fun movie, directed by Christopher Landon. This is pretty fast paced with a little bit of a lag once they are back at Millie’s house with the Butcher tied up but otherwise, it’s good! Good fight scenes, great physical effects and graphic gory kills, very good cast and bonus points for the gay guy and black girl not dying first. It’s not only a body swap movie but also a solid revenge movie. There are few wimpy female parts in this one, everyone fights! Well done!

Also, Alan Ruck is in this!
