Macabre...ish Horror Review: Gremlins 2: The New Batch

 

 

Gremlins 2, The New Batch, 1990/ 106 min.

Gizmo (Howie Mandel) becomes a subject at a lab, after his owner, Mr. Wing dies. And is rescued by his old friend, Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan), and his fiancée, Kate (Phoebe Cates), who both work in the same high rise that houses the lab and is owned by his boss, eccentric billionaire Daniel Clamp (John Glover).

 

 

While Gizmo is alone in the office, water drips on him from a broken fountain and 4 new mogwai are spawned (Daffy, George, Lenny and Mohawk).

 

 

 

They imprison Gizmo in a ventilation system and escape into the food court, after midnight,

 

 

transforming them into gremlins. After Gizmo escapes, Mohawk tortures him. Using electricity, adhering and ripping velcro off of him, beating him, and menacing him by hitting him with a toy train and forcing him onto a photocopier and making copies. They quickly spawning an army of them when the other gremlins set off the fire extinguishers, creating total chaos in the building. 

 

 

Billy quickly educates his boss, Clamp, on gremlin facts and create a plan to lure the gremlins into the lobby so they can be destroyed by the Sun. Clamp heads down into the secret tunnel and around to the front of the building, covering it with a sheet, tricking the Gremlins. Meanwhile, some gremlins get into the genetic lab and drink serums, one is turned into pure electricity, and kills the chief researcher, Dr. Catheter (Christopher Lee).

 

 

A genius, wants to inoculate them from the sun with a sun block serum. and a femme fatale gremlin. And one randomly becomes a television show host, amongst the chaos, turning it into comedy and interviews a tourist, Mr. Katsuji (Gedde Watanabe).

 

 

There are also hybrids! A bat gremlin is killed with cement, turning into a gargoyle,

 

 

perched outside of the building. Gizmo kills Mohawk who’s turned into a massive spider,

 

 

after drinking Spider Serum, with fire and white out. Murray (Dick Miller) dives into the fray to help, once he realizes he’s not going insane. Billy, releases the captured Electric Gremlin into the massive group of gremlins gathered in the rain, in the foyer, singing New York, New York, killing them all. Clamp arrives with police and journalists and is so thrilled the mayhem is over that he promotes everyone and hires Mr. Katsuji.

 

Aside from this movie being unapologetically gremlin, it has a ton of recognizable and iconic faces, which I love!! New and different gremlins as well as hybrids, as well as tons of mayhem but in a smaller location that the first. Along with many of the same actors from the original, reprising their roles. It’s still somewhat gross and graphic but it’s still good!
