Macabre...ish Horror Review: Odd Thomas

Odd Thomas, 2013/ 93 min

Odd (Anton Yelchin) sees dead people and one day he began seeing dead people without faces in his small California town, Pico Mundo. He keeps his ability a secret so he doesn’t get locked up like his mother. Well except from his girlfriend, Stormy (Addison Timlin) and the Chief (Willem Dafoe)

He likes to use his gift to hunt bad guys, namely murderers, and confront them for their victims, who are often nearby. He gives them details of their crimes and the trophies they keep. Then he turns them over to the police (he and the Chief have an understanding) Usually after chasing them down and a nice beat down.

On the day he’s carried away by the faceless people, he is very aware something huge is coming. Plus dead people usually can’t talk, these, could.

And the next day, he sees a bodach, if the bodach realizes you can see them, they will kill you. When they show up, carnage follows, and if there are many, then they are in real trouble.

He realizes, he and his friend Vi (GuGu Mbatha-Raw) , ‘dreamt’ the same guy and their own deaths, plus the bodach population has exploded. Which is terrible news because they are attracted to evil and slaughter, which means this little town is in deep.

Odd finds a little house on the edge of town that seems to be a shrine to serial killers, files with blood swatches and a fridge full of body parts and roaches. It has become the gateway from which the bodachs pour through. Odd finds evidence that something major is going to happen on the 15th, tomorrow.

And there’s a creepy dude, Robert Roberts, they call him Fungus Bob, he has something to do with his. Where he goes bodachs follows. Hopefully Odd can figure it out before it’s too late.

This is a mystery thriller and a very entertaining one. Good cast, concept and effects. Well done!
