Macabre...ish Horror Review: Poker Night

Poker Night (The Joker UK), 2014 / 104 min.

A new detective is invited to play poker with veteran detectives, as they play they all share wisdom they’ve learned from different murder cases they’ve investigated. And when the new guy, Stan Jeter (Beau Mirchoff) is kidnapped and held captive, that wisdom becomes invaluable. Also being held captive is Amy, one of the veteran cop’s daughter, that he sort of has a thing with. And he’s had Amy for a few weeks already.

It becomes clear that this some kind of sick game and it seems impossible to win. The movie flashes back and forth between the poker game/cop stories and Stan and Amy’s ordeal in captivity. Including his kidnapper explaining who he is and how he got there. And his story is pretty hilarious, when it’s not serious.

All the stories are interwoven with the real time story of the cops trying to find him and Amy, including narration. You have to sit and pay attention or it won’t make any sense. Plenty of recognizable faces; Ron Perlman, Giancarlo Esposito, Titus Welliver and Ron Eldard. The story is somewhat convoluted and the ending is maddening but overall it’s a pretty good psychological thriller.
