Macabre...ish Horror Review: The Broken

The Broken, 2008/ 1 hr 33 min. After her father’s (Richard Jenkins) surprise party, on her way home, Gina (Lena Headey) is in a serious car accident after she sees someone who looks just like her. She doesn’t just look like her, the woman’s car is identical to hers, so she precedes to follow the woman home.  She sneaks into her flat and sees photos of her and her Dad on a table. Frightened, she flees and still unsettled she has a head on collision with another car.

Gina wakes up in the hospital with no memory of the accident, eventually her boyfriend, Stefan (Melvil Poupaud) takes her home. Back at his flat, his mirror’s missing, only noted because her Dad’s mirror broke at his party. Apparently mirrors are just breaking everywhere. Stefan is acting odd and Gina is unnerved by the disconnect.

She contacts her therapist and is reassured that it could be a condition she developed since the accident.

Everything is off, nothing feels right, people are acting strange. So resolved to figure it out. In the mean time, she keeps hearing and seeing broken mirrors. Having flash backs that barely makes sense and terrifying thoughts, dreams and memories(?). When she finally answers one big question, (that damn leak!!) the rest falls into place and nothing, including Gina, is what it seems.

This is a good movie and very eerie! I didn’t know what was going to happen and I was hooked until the end and the end was a great surprise and I wanted more. Good cinematography, good story and a good thriller. Had just jump scares in all the right places. There’s nudity and some sexual scenes. Violence and blood. This British-French film was directed and written by Sean Ellis.
