Macabre…ish Horror Review: Christmas Horror Movies

It’s December and here are some Christmas horror picks. If you’re looking for some slasher fun, you can’t miss with P2 and ATM. P2 gives you the terror of working with an obsessed psycho who finally shoots his shot in all the worst possible ways and all Angela has to do is survive it.

ATM is what happens when that last trip to the ATM crosses with a killer of opportunity. The kiosk becomes a trap and stage. And the show is one of fear and death as the captives fight to survive and hopefully escape before it’s too late.

There’s also a holiday vacay on the slopes in Let It Snow, after being warned to stay off of a restricted slope, some vacationers find out why. As people go missing and remains are discovered, they’ll also find a terrible game of car and mouse instigated by a killer who’s been playing the game a long time.

Or are you looking for something more festive and with more Christmas lore plus mayhem. Then you might like Saint (Sint) that tells the Dutch tale of St. Nicholas and the slaughter of Dutch children on the night of the full moon.

Or perhaps Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale and the Finnish story of the tomb an evil Santa Claus being unearthed and answers the question of why reindeer and children have been disappearing.

How about the story of Krampus who punishes children on Christmas time. A dysfunctional family causes Max to lose his festive spirit and that unleashes the demon upon the town. The family will have to rely on each other to survive. There are at least three in this franchise at the time of this post but the first is the best.

Maybe you’re in the mood for a French Belgian holiday horror, The Advent Calendar (La Calendrier). Eva receives an antique wooden advent calendar but instead of a sweet treat per day, this one has rules…"Rule 1, This calendar contains candy, if you eat one, you must eat them all. Or I'll kill you. Rule 2, Respect allt rules until the last door is opened. Or I'll kill you. Rule 3, dump it. And I'll kill you."

And then we have Mercy Christmas where the guest to the evening meal find out, they are the meal! There’s Christmas Bloody Christmas where an electronic store Santa goes haywire and goes on a killing spree.

The old favorite, Black Christmas where a deranged man is secreted in a sorority house and kills the occupants one by one. There’s also a remake, Black Xmas (2006) and a Blum House reimagining Black Christmas (2019). And there’s the fan film by director Dave McRae who made a continuation of the original called It’s Me, Billy Chapter 1 & 2.

And don’t forget Christmas Evil, where a toymaker who cannot take criticism of his work and he loses it and goes on a killing spree. If you have and enjoy dark comedy then you might give Santa’s Slay a go!

There’s Something in the Barn is about Americans moving to Norway to take possession of a family home. Unbeknownst to them vengeful elves are determined to get rid of them.

If anthologies are more your thing then you can’t miss out on Deathcember! It’s super long and there’s bound to be a treat or two in it for you! And don’t forget All The Creatures Were Stirring among the stories is one hell of a Office Christmas Party.

And I have to add Happy to this list because though it is not horror, per se, it is graphic, violent and the topic is human trafficking.

A disturbed Santa is kidnapping children and a very troubled, corrupt suicidal ex cop, Nick Sax, is on the trail with his imaginary friend, Happy. Happy arrived after Nick had a medical emergency and kind of never went away. Happy is Nick’s constant and annoying companion as Nick tries to survive his vices, attempts on his life and the search for the missing kids, one of which is his own, and their kidnapper.
